There are a number of project management certifications to choose from when looking to get certified, including PRINCE2, PMP and Agile among others. All of these project management methods are well known in the industry and have gained a remarkable number of followers.
So why decide to study PRINCE2 when there are so many other options to choose from? Does it really matter which method is followed and why should anyone care about PRINCE2 when they already have a project management certification? The answer lies in project success:
1. Added tailoring
Adding PRINCE2 to an existing project management certification may seem redundant, but given it’s ability to be tailored to the exact needs of any project, it makes a lot of sense. The knowledge that you have gained from previous studies and experience in the field can only be further enhanced by the PRINCE2 methodology.
You will gain the ability to use PRINCE2 alongside the method that you are already familiar with, with the added convenience of managing projects in stages. This gives you the chance to monitor the project incrementally and a clearer insight of where the project is heading, making it easier to rectify issues that may occur during a project stage.
2. Professional Input
The PRINCE2 methodology has been revised multiple times utilising the experiences gathered from practicing Project Managers while using PRINCE2 from about 150 organisations. This has ensured that the method has stayed up to date and covers all aspects of project management, no matter how small the detail.
This has also further built on the trustworthiness of PRINCE2 since those contributing Project Managers have years of experience in the field of project management and have helped ensure that the method remains easy to use while still being considered the most effective method available.
3. Becoming employed
Finding employment without a certification on your CV is a near impossible task and the prevailing trend is that employers only consider those with at least one certification to their name for candidacy when looking to hire new staff and, in project management specifically, a PRINCE2 certification is often required before being considered.
The mere reputation of PRINCE2 helps any CV stand out amongst others when recruiters and potential employers are sifting through candidates to interview for a project management position. Gaining a PRINCE2 certification greatly increases your chances of not only making it to the interview stage, but gaining employment.
4. PRINCE2 removes confusion
Having a clearly outlined and defined organisational structure is vital for any organisation and the same holds true for any project. PRINCE2 ensures that each member working on the project knows exactly what they are meant to do and when to do it.
This completely negates miscommunication and guarantees that there can be no confusion regarding responsibilities or what each team member’s role in the project is. This is further helped by the fact that PRINCE2 uses a common language, ensuring that everyone involved understands the lingo being used.
5. Managing risks
PRINCE2 breaks projects down into smaller, more manageable stages to help manage any risks that may occur during the project. At the end of each project stage, the project is reviewed and any risks are identified.
If any problems have arisen, this gives the Project Manager a chance to remedy the situation before the next project stage begins, enabling them to once again steer the project in the desired direction and giving the project a much greater chance at being successful from it’s inception right through to it’s conclusion.
6. PRINCE2 is global
PRINCE2 is practiced in over 50 countries worldwide and the certification gained from completing your PRINCE2 studies, whether it is the PRINCE2 Foundation or the PRINCE2 Practitioner level, is internationally recognised, meaning that the skills and knowledge gained from your studies are applicable, no matter where you may be.
7. Study online
You will be able to undertake your PRINCE2 studies from the comfort of your own home. This enables you to study at a pace that you are comfortable with and negates the need to travel to and from a classroom, which can often be noisy and distracting
Once you have finished studying your PRINCE2 course, you will also be able to sit your exam at home using a working webcam with a microphone and stable internet connection. You can schedule your exam to be written at any time or date, 24/7.
8. Quality of practice
PRINCE2 uses a set of 7 Themes, 7 Processes and 7 Principles during the management of a project. Implementing these factors ensures that the project follows the methodology and remains truly PRINCE2.
Best practice project management adds to the reliability of the PRINCE2 method, as it has been tried and tested repeatedly to ensure that only the best results are attained when implementing PRINCE2.
9. Reduced costs
Creating a project management method from scratch can be an extremely costly undertaking. Other project management methods that are “ready to use” often include a licensing fee which is usually paid annually. This can normally only be done by large companies who can afford to pay that kind of expense. PRINCE2 requires no payment of licensing fees and is completely free to use.
10. Reduced time
Any organisation that implements the PRINCE2 methodology will save on time spent recruiting and training new project managers, as the method is already in place and a new PRINCE2 certified employee can merely slot into their role.
