What is Lean Six Sigma?
Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that focuses on collaboration, in order to improve performance, by removing waste and reducing variation. Say what? If your new to Lean Six Sigma, then check out this short clip on Ashton Kutcher’s response to going to work with his father, a certified Black Belt.
Ashton Kutcher and Lean Six Sigma
As you can see from this short clip, trying to understand the Lean Six Sigma terminology can be difficult, even in ‘plain English’. Therefore I’ve made it my mission to make this post as informative and easy to understand as possible.
Basically, Lean Six Sigma is a combination of Lean and Six Sigma. Let’s unpack these terms so that you can get a better understanding and then we’ll discuss why these certifications are so desirable.
What is Lean?
According to ASQ, “Lean is the elimination of all non-value-adding activities and waste from the business.” Lean is a philosophy about delivering value from your customer’s perspective, while at the same time eliminating waste. It focuses on continuously improving processes and can radically change the way an organisation operates.
What is Six Sigma?
Six Sigma is, “A method that provides organisations tools to improve the capability of their business processes. This increase in performance and decrease in process variation lead to defect reduction and improvement in profits, employee morale, and quality of products or services.” The Six Sigma method allows businesses to track preventable defects, delays and deviation. It starts by searching for the problem and then focusing on what the problem really is. As time and resources are often limited, you decide what you will solve (you cannot solve everything) and then sustain the improvements you have made.
Lean Six Sigma
“Lean Six Sigma is a management approach to business performance improvement that has blended the two individual specialisms of Lean and Six Sigma. The application of Lean Six Sigma allows quality and efficiency improvements to be effectively realised. The focus of Lean is about speed, efficiency and taking waste out of a process. Six Sigma focuses on effectiveness and removal of errors.”
Lean Six Sigma, which is a process improvement methodology, provides a way to find hours of wasted activity that is disguised as productivity. It focuses on performance improvement, by removing errors and then providing an approach to resolving problems. It’s a process of discovering errors and removing waste, in order for an organisation to reach it’s true potential.
