What you will learn
The APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) is a comprehensive, internationally recognised course that builds a deeper level of knowledge and capability in project management. It covers the full spectrum of project management processes, skills, and techniques, giving you the ability not only to understand key concepts but also to apply them in practical, real-world scenarios. With an emphasis on planning, control, leadership, and delivery, the PMQ prepares you to manage projects of varying size and complexity across industries. Completing this qualification demonstrates to employers that you have the competence and confidence to lead and contribute effectively to project success.
Context and Governance
Gain a deep understanding of how projects differ from business-as-usual operations and why organisations rely on them to deliver change. You will explore the relationship between projects, programmes, and portfolios, and how they align to business strategy. This section also examines governance frameworks, regulatory influences, and the external environment through tools such as PESTLE analysis, giving you the ability to place your projects in the broader organisational and societal context. By mastering these foundations, you will understand how governance and context shape decision-making and ensure accountability.
Concepts and Lifecycle
Learn how projects are structured from start to finish. You will study the phases of a project lifecycle, from initiation through definition, development, handover, and closure, and the deliverables expected at each stage. This module goes beyond theory by exploring different lifecycle approaches, including predictive (waterfall), iterative (agile), and hybrid models, and when to apply each. By the end, you will have the confidence to tailor lifecycle choices to the needs of your organisation, project, and stakeholders.
People and Professionalism
Projects succeed through people, and this section explores how to lead, motivate, and manage them effectively. You will study the key roles in a project environment such as the project sponsor, project manager, stakeholders, and team members, and understand how responsibilities are distributed. This module also dives into leadership styles, motivation theories, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills, helping you to build and sustain high-performing teams. Alongside this, you will examine the importance of professionalism and ethics, ensuring that your work aligns with best practice and industry standards.
Planning and Scheduling
Discover how planning integrates all aspects of project delivery into a coherent roadmap. You will learn to capture and manage requirements, define project scope, and build work breakdown structures (WBS). This section covers estimating and budgeting methods, as well as scheduling techniques such as critical path analysis, resource levelling, and dependency management. By creating integrated plans and baselines, you will gain the ability to monitor performance, control change, and provide stakeholders with confidence in delivery.
Risk and Quality
Learn how to manage both the threats and opportunities that projects face. You will explore structured processes for risk and issue management, as well as strategies for identifying, analysing, and responding to them. This section also covers opportunity management, helping you to maximise positive outcomes. Quality management is introduced as a continuous process involving planning, assurance, and control, supported by lessons learned and continuous improvement practices. By applying these approaches, you will understand how to deliver results that are robust, reliable, and trusted by stakeholders.
Control and Delivery
Build the skills needed to keep projects under control throughout delivery. You will study formal change control processes, monitoring and reporting techniques, and an introduction to earned value management (EVM) to measure performance. This section also introduces procurement and contract management, giving you awareness of how to engage suppliers, manage contracts, and ensure value for money. With these skills, you will be prepared to manage project delivery in a structured, transparent, and accountable way.
